Before embarking on tour, Broadside have two fresh tracks for fans. The first is ‘King of Nothing’, an energetic and powerful song about dealing with the hardships of not being good enough and struggling with that mentality. The lyrics are really deep and showcase that mentality, perfectly. A lyric that stuck out to me from the chorus in this song was, “I’ve lost all control, erased all I’ve ever known, so go and live it up, rotting here alone”. This stood out to me because it really shows that no matter what you can have, you still may not feel happy or like you’re doing enough in your life. It may feel like others are rising above you and you’re just stuck, rotting alone in a dark corner. After only one listen, the song is stuck in my head, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s a song that fans will likely have on repeat when this new music drops this Wednesday, May 15. I know I’ll definitely be blasting this in my car in the near future.

‘Empty’, the other song that Broadside is releasing, reminds me slightly of the new Emarosa album sound-wise. It sounds way different dynamically in comparison to ‘King of Nothing’, but is still super catchy. The instrumentals are phenomenal, especially after the choruses. It is super upbeat and makes you want to dance along to the music. This is another song that really is well-written and has some great lyrics inside. “What’s the point of falling in love, when you always fall too hard? Cause I don’t wanna talk about how you got me feeling so empty”. Lead singer Ollie Baxxter says that this song is about how it can sometimes be unfortunate to be in love when you’re stuck in this mentality where you know you’ve been hurt and wronged and should leave, but want to stay because the memories and good times mean so much. This is a song that I know I can relate to, and I’m sure many others can as well. The chorus sticks in your head for sure.

These are the first new songs from the band in quite some time, and as someone who has followed the band for several years now, hearing the growth from these songs compared to their other stuff is significant. There is so many more musical dynamics in these songs, harmonies, and overall a great slight change in sound that they pull off well. I’m super excited to continue to hear new music from them in the future.

To hear these new songs live, be sure to catch Broadside on tour with Set It Off from June 11 to July 19.
