Real Friends are up to something, but what that something is-be it new music, a hiatus, or a complete rebrand-remains to be seen. The pop-punk band’s social media has been wiped clean; no tweets, no pictures, no profile pictures, nothing. We’ve seen this before from bands like The 1975 and Grayscale, and while it’s usually a signal of new music, other actions seem to point away from this. 

Real Friends bassist Kyle Fasel’s Instagram drew fans attention in late December when he posted a picture of some handwritten poetry (to right), as he’s known to do, that read “Don’t let the passing of time decide whether or not you should stay.” His caption seemed to confirm some fans’ fears of a breakup: “Don’t stay in a situation solely based on how long you’ve been in it. It’s hard to say goodbye, but sometimes that’s what you need to do in order to grow.”

Vocalist Dan Lambton spoke about the breakup rumors on a recent Twitch stream that is now unavailable. He assured fans the band wasn’t breaking up, but didn’t give many more details on the matter. He did however say new music and live shows are coming in the future, so fans can hopefully breathe a sigh of relief. Last month, the band’s Instagram account replied to fan saying “we will be back in 2-3 years,” meaning the guys could just be taking some much needed rest and relaxation. 

Without a definitive statement from the band, there’s still a great deal of mystery surrounding their status. Could they be debuting a new sound or image? Are they taking time off from the road and recording? What do you think is going on with Real Friends?
