Australian metalcore band Northlane released a documentary on their YouTube channel Tuesday, depicting the band’s uncertainty surrounding their future at several points in their career. Titled “Negative Energy,” the 30-minute film details the last five years of the band, particularly the recording of their 2019 album Alien.

Northlane teased the documentary as a “story of a band on the brink of collapse.” The emotionally impactful documentary details the struggles the band faced over the past few years, including former vocalist Adrian Fitipaldes’ departure and financial struggles that prevented the band from touring.

Vocalist Marcus Bridge spoke of his mother who passed away, yet another painful endeavor the band had to deal with during this very difficult time. Bridge also talks about his relationship with his parents and how it was complicated by addiction and mental health issues. The documentary recounts Bridge deciding to use music to work through his pain and tell the story of his upbringing.

Ultimately, through the pain, loss, and uncertainty, the band found new success with Alien. Upon releasing “Negative Energy,” the band tweeted, “We hope it inspires you to stay strong in your own lives during these troubled times we are living through.”
