Report: Most Independent Music Venues Are In Danger of Closing

See this content in the original post

90% of independent music venues in the US are facing the very real possibility of closing permanently. The National Independent Venue Association, a newly-formed organization of independent venues and promoters, is asking Congress for federal funding that they say without, most independent venues would be forced to close.

Barracuda in Austin and Great Scott in Allston, MA are just two examples of venues that have already announced their permanent closure since the COVID-19 pandemic put the touring world on pause in March. NIVA’s recent fact sheet paints a grim picture of the months to come if venues don’t receive serious help.

NIVA explains that music venues were among the first to close and will be the last to open. But while they’re unable to host shows, costs like rent, insurance and bills haven’t stopped, essentially bleeding these venues dry. Travel disruption nationwide is another obstacle preventing these venues from booking tours.

We are still far away from tours resuming and venues opening their doors again. If independent venues don’t get the support they’re asking for, the entertainment landscape will look very different on the other side of this pandemic.
