Artists Who Support the LGBTQ+ Community
June is a month where everyone can show pride in who they are, no matter how “different” they are, without judgement. Pride shouldn’t be limited to a single month each year, but every day the world is taking a step closer to total equality. There are many bands that support the LGBTQ+ community and some that are part of it themselves. Identifying as anything but straight shouldn’t be something that people are scared to admit, but little by little, the people are willing to open their minds and their hearts.
Brendon Urie - Panic at the Disco
Brendon Urie has openly expressed that he is pansexual. Yes, he is married to one lucky lady, but he does not conform to society and hide behind the fact that his true love just happened to be a woman. Urie has played with gender norms in his music and also looks fabulous in his kinky boots.
The 1975
This band has openly expressed how supportive they are to the LGBTQ+ community. They have even featured a pride flag on one of their tour t-shirts and left it at that, along with their name of course.
Lynn Gunn - PVRIS
Lynn has been out since the age of 18 and is a strong advocate for the LGBTQ community.
Billie Joe Armstrong - Green Day
Billie Joe is a bisexual man who believes that every person is born bisexual. He believes parents are the ones who influence which gender they think they prefer, though ultimately, it is your own decision.
Tyler Carter - ISSUES
Tyler openly came out as bisexual in 2015 and is currently engaged to his boo. It’s amazing how far the world has come to support same-sex marriage and equal rights.
There are bands that aren’t part of the LGBTQ+ community who support equal rights. There are many artists that stand up for what they believe in and aren’t afraid to lose followers or fans if they don’t agree with their beliefs. Heck, being in the scene, a lot of bands play with gender roles by wearing makeup or wearing clothes that people judge as “wrong.”
In today’s world, what is right and what is wrong is constantly being debated. Whether the debate is between gender, religion, ethnicity, or sexuality, not everyone is going to agree with the same viewpoint, but it is important to not close your mind to other ideas and viewpoints.
Equal rights are a hot topic in the world and people are becoming more educated on the issues from protests, parades, or even on social media. Bands have used their platform and influence on others to spread the word and stand up for important issues that are either swept under the rug or looked down upon.
Now, this isn’t always the case, but more bands are supportive now than ever. Some of these bands include:
Slipknot
Bullet For My Valentine
Paramore
Asking Alexandria
Bring Me the Horizon
Avenged Sevenfold
Sharptooth
Senses Fail
Stray From the Path
Stick to Your Guns
ICONS
We also can’t forget the icons that have helped pave the way for this community. These legendary artists embraced who they are so that artists today were able to follow in their footsteps with little to no fear. Some of the most iconic rock artists who paved the way for LGBTQ+ rockers include:
Elton John
Freddie Mercury
Joan Jett
David Bowie
Mick Jaggar
SCENE ORGANIZATIONS
Not only are bands involved, but organizations that are in our scene are highly supportive of LGBTQ+ rights. Some of those organizations include:
All in all, LGBTQ+ artists have come a long way from where they started. It is becoming more and more common for artists to not hide themselves in a closet and instead embrace their individuality and creativity to become someone no one can forget. Labels can restrain some artists, so by continuing to accept and acknowledge that not everyone's the same, the scene is becoming a lot more colorful and continues to be an open space for people to feel safe.
