REVIEW: Bring Me The Horizon (with YUNGBLUD) "Obey"

Bring Me the Horizon's “Obey” featuring YUNGBLUD is everything you could have asked for and more. YUNGBLUD’s feature fits perfectly with the song and follows Oli’s part of the song seamlessly. Their voices compliment each other well which the band used to their advantage by including YUNGBLUD throughout the song instead of just a small section.

This song about corruption makes you want to take action about what is happening in the world. The band sings about wanting to stay asleep or go against the current. The lyrics are similar to an inner monologue of what it’s like to wake up and live each day trying to fit the norm yet escaping it. They repeatedly sing, “Just don't wake up and smell the corruption.” If this song is giving off any strong vibes, it’s to #notobey.

Sykes had this to say about the meaning behind the song: “We consider ourselves free but only because the chains are invisible, and we are controlled in ways we don’t even want to think about. They tell us how to live with a smile on their face, like shit ain't fucked up, inform us of tragic statistics like its nothing… it’s a weird world.”

YUNGBLUD followed up saying, “They try to keep us divided because it makes us weaker. Robots follow robots, because they feel nothing at all. But what they don’t realize is that to us, to be different is to be free and a world of fucking love and equality is a world we want to be part of. We will rise above the hate and the diversion. We will fight for the world we want to be a part of. We will not obey.”

The “Obey” music video, which was released an hour after the single, was unexpected. The video didn’t incorporate any of the bloody images or relate to the caped photos that were posted announcing the times around the world that the song would be released. Interestingly enough, it was about two giant robots in a city that are on their own, saw each other, started fighting in the city, and ultimately had a dramatic kiss and walked together into the sunset. Looks like we haven’t been the only ones lonely during the quarantine.

Following the release of “Obey” and the music video, more images were posted of Oli and Dom that had a similar theme as their previous photos. Maybe the British boys still have something up their sleeves or they could have just had some fun being creative together. To be continued... This song is a strong follow up to “Parasite Eve,” which the band released in June which you can listen to here as well as YUNGBLUD’s most recent single “Lemonade” featuring Denzel Curry. These artists have certainly set high standards for what is to come and hopefully they continue to impress.
