REVIEW: VRSTY "Massive"

Many will say that the rock genre has become "too much of the same" and that the space we have today is not leaving much room for artists to grow. Times are changing, and while technology and social media are making it easy and accessible for people to listen to artists' music, it has also made it increasingly hard to make their music noticed. While this is true to some degree, something within the band has to stick if they want to be unique from the rest. VRSTY is here to prove that not everything has been done in the genre and is taking it by reins with their latest single release, "Massive." Since 2015, the New York City quartet has been molding together the best aspects of R&B, pop, imbued with heavy melodic grooves and chugging riffs to create an unexampled sound that has gotten many people talking. This comes after releasing their first single, "Shameless," and the announcement of their upcoming EP, CLOUD CITY.

Their take-off to notoriety in the scene picked up with their 2019 EP, BLCK, where the group would proudly flex their pop and R&B muscles along with gritty metallic undertones. Since then, their signature R&Bcore structure would not only centerfold them as one of the more uniquely talented bands in the scene but would catch the attention of and to be signed by one of the most renowned record companies in the industry, Spinefarm Records. The band doesn't plan on stopping now as "Massive" is planting a firm spot within the genre, showing they have truly arrived. With frontman Joey Varela's soaring multilayered vocals weaving vicariously through giant riffs and a dynamic drum presence, it's a shining example of what VRSTY has been cooking up this entire time since their last full EP release. Frontman Joey Varela chimed in his thoughts on the bands' sound and their future direction with the band's recent success.

"When people ask me what do we sound like, I say, 'We're whatever you want us to be'" states Joey. " I can't put a genre on us, because I'm a pop and R&B singer who loves metal. There are going to be pop tracks, metal tracks, and R&B tracks. It's super different heavy music with pop-inspired vocals. The genre has enough bands that sound similar. If you spend time trying to do what's popular, you fall into a mode. That's not something we are interested in. The music has to be fun for us and for and the people listening to it."

If this is any evidence of what their upcoming CLOUD CITY EP is going to sound like in December, we are in for one explosive ride.

"I just want VRSTY to be something that helps not only me but my bandmates," he leaves off. "The goal always is to do something different. We sound like us and nobody else."
