Solo gothic rock/metal project Jake’s Mistakes have released their new concept EP, KAI: Creaturae, the follow-up to 2020’s Friends. Throughout the EP, Jacob Ekleberry (solo member of Jake’s Mistakes) details the story of the character KAI, the alter ego embodiment of everything negative in his life - specifically, depression, anxiety, past mistakes, and regret.

“Paper Chains” was a hit single released in anticipation of the EP, which delves into a metaphorical battle between Jacob and KAI surrounding writing music. From Jacob’s perspective, writing music is an outlet for creativity, but KAI is constantly reminding him that it is really just a distraction from dealing with depression. Jacob is “chained” to the paper in which he continually writes. Along with the rest of the EP, “Paper Chains” is akin to recent releases from Poppy and Ghostemane, fusing distorted elements of metal with moments of pop.

Jake’s Mistake is heavily influenced by acts such as Alice Cooper, My Chemical Romance, and Black Veil Brides, as well as varying pop artists like Yungblud and The Weeknd. Ultimately, Jake’s Mistakes has delivered a thought-provoking EP, full of classic scene influences. Be sure to check out the official video for “Paper Chains” below!
