In Shallows Debut With ‘Phantom Grace’
The New England music scene is always brewing something, so when a new metalcore band came to shore, the whole scene was in for a treat. Last Friday, June 11, New Hampshire metalcore newbies, In Shallows, summoned the local scene’s interest with their debut single “Phantom Grace.” “Phantom Grace” is the first taste of what In Shallows has to offer, and from the sound of things they already are on the right track when it comes to breaking into the alternative scene.
“Phantom Grace” begins with an eerie piano intro, adding a creepy suspenseful sensation before immediately transitioning into the first of many breakdowns with a crisp loud growl, “THERE IS NO ESCAPE.” The vocals throughout the entire song are perfectly enunciated while maintaining that same concentrated loud, angry growl. It is rare when I fully understand the lyrics on my first listen, so I was pleasantly surprised and extremely excited to find out I could follow along with what was being said on just one listen. This is even more crucial when lyrics have crucial messages that need to be heard. In the case of “Phantom Grace,” the subject of mental health is brought up, a topic that always needs more discussion. Clarity is crucial and without sacrificing the classic metalcore sound, vocalist Colin Trombley pulled this off quite well.
Instrumentally, this track stands its ground. Combine creative bass lines from Cam Bostwick with compelling guitar riffs by Bobby Wharton and you get one amazing track that will instantly get stuck in your head. Not to mention, drummer Nick Keane supports it all, his steady beats and unique drum fills are the backbone of the single. Tying everything together, the same piano melody at the beginning is repeated at the close. My favorite part, however, has nothing to do with the stellar lyrics, crisp screams, or bangin’ melody; but when Colin Trombley pulls a Sam Carter with a perfectly timed “blegh,” bringing back the best of 2010 metalcore - peak metalcore nostalgia with a modern day twist.
All in all, I found “Phantom Grace” has not only been stuck in my head since release, but has made quite the first impression. A band/artist only gets one debut single. One chance to show the world who they are and what is coming. One first impression to make a killer statement. I found myself immediately hitting the save button and craving more music. Thankfully, In Shallows is set to release their debut EP later this year. For now, you can watch the music video and stream the single on all streaming platforms.
