Skate-punk legends, MxPx, come back to the surface of the scene with their new ska-influenced single, “Say Yes” featuring rising star of the scene, Rivals’ Kalie Wolfe. For 30 years MxPx have provided energetic singles and compelling albums, all bearing positive messages that stick with us as we grow. Needless to say, the band is quite known for their pop-punk anthems. This Friday, July 23rd, MxPx are dropping a slammin’ summer single that has us not just saying, but screaming, yes! This track is claimed to be “an ode to the nostalgia of fresh and free-spirited summer romance that will transport you back to your teen years.”

Back to my teen years did I go, for this ska-punk single brought me all the way back to Warped Tour in its prime. When I listen to “Say Yes” I can only feel excitement, anticipating what is next to come from MxPx. Already, I have my checkered Vans slipped on and am teaching myself how to “two-step” along to this upbeat summer anthem.

Instrumentally, the riveting guitar and bass riffs combined with a steady drum beat remind me of why MxPx are punk royalty. Instantaneous joy and a melody that fails to keep even the most stubborn fans still. The addition of horns adds a nice summer surf essence, immersing me in the soundwaves. The contrast between Mike Herrera and Kalie Wolfe’s voices add a layer of depth that I would expect from a musical such as Grease, and the back and forth conversation within the lyrics keeps me hooked onto the story of spontaneous and romantic day trips. All in all, this is one banger not to be skipped when it comes to summer playlist making.

MxPx vocalist, Mike Herrera tells Scene Daddy, “‘Say Yes’  is about taking that chance and just asking that special someone what you’ve been wanting to ask. Saying what you’ve been dying to say. It’s a summer time feel good jam and I know you wanna say yes!.”  He continues, “'Say Yes’ is a celebration song. A celebration of putting it all out there no matter what might happen. What’s gonna happen? I have no idea, but we’ll find out together. Don’t worry about the what if’s just the what could be’s and the what might be’s. These lyrics are trying to get into your feelings and get a yes or no answer from you. Let’s hope it’s a yes. So take a leap, fall fast, and have hope that someone will be there to catch you.”

This is emphasized in the lyrics, “And if you say no it’ll be a long ride home / And if you say no it’s gonna be a long drive home alone” and “But if you say yes / I’ll wear my best and you can wear that dress / And if you say yes / Just be ready I’ll take care of the rest / And if you say yes /This is only the beginning - far from over and done / And if you say yes / I’m saying if nothing lasts forever / Then let’s do nothing together.

Featuring on a MxPx song was nothing short of a dream come true for Rivals’ Kalie Wolfe. Wolfe opened up to us saying, “I have a fond memory of my brother and I burning a CD for my family's yearly boat trip to Laughlin, NV. On that CD contained an MxPx song. If you would’ve told 8-year-old me that I’d be featuring on an MxPx song I’d probably call you a liar.

Much like the theme of this summer anthem, Kalie chose yes and ended up living out her childhood dream. You can also 'Say Yes' by living your life to the fullest and by listening to “Say Yes” on all social media platforms. Music video coming soon to a YouTube screen near you!
