A Day to Remember has created an album you would rather forget. ADTR released their new album, You’re Welcome, on March 5th. This album has been a long time coming, with the first single being released in August 2019, but unfortunately, the album did not live up to certain standards. 

A Day to Remember took on a new sound with this album, which listeners caught a glimpse of when the band released a single with “Marshmallow.” It isn’t a big deal if bands want to change their sound, but it still has to be done well. The singles on the album, including “Degenerates,” “Resentment,” “Mindreader,” “Brick Wall,” and “Everything We Need,” gave listeners an inside look of what was to come, but unfortunately, it led to confusion and fearing the album instead of excitement.

Going through the album, it doesn’t sound like the ADTR that fans have loved from the start. Some of the singing parts sound a bit off, starting with the first track, “Brick Wall,” though some songs have a saving grace. Some of what’s going on in the background doesn’t mix well with the instruments or the overall image of the song. Some of the choruses are catchy but the verses are forgettable or vice versa. It all just depends on the song because each one gives off a different vibe. 

ADTR has adopted more of a poppy sound with this new album, but not as good as their Pop Goes Punk track, “Since You’ve Been Gone.” There are catchy songs, but where is A Day to Remember in all of this? Listeners were excited to hear “Last Chance To Dance (Bad Friend),” which was the only heavy song on the album… Yikes. Other songs sound basic, boring, and overall just okay.

When listening through the album, it is clear that some of the best songs on the album were the singles. They had some catchy beats and melodies, good instrumental energies, and some tracks were a bit heavier compared to the others. Jeremy (lead vocalist) does a lot more singing on his own on this album, and it doesn’t work as well with some songs. A lot of songs have a similar sound with the vocals and the intro, with some light background synths or sounds; but why?

More things don’t work on this album or songs that are unforgettable such as the group are: “Viva La Mexico,” “Only Money,” and “Bloodsucker” sounds like an attempt to reach out to Fall Out Boy crowds. Overall, this album was highly anticipated, then the pandemic happened, and people lost interest when the band decided to postpone the release, this led to many forgetting when the release date even was. Here’s to hoping that ADTR was working on even more new music during the break, and we will get a better album sooner than later. For now, we can just keep playing Homesick and pretend this never happened.
