The Northern Begin a New Chapter with “Hourglass”

Toronto-based metalcore group The Northern have kicked off their 2023 with the release of “Hourglass”. The band calls this track “the beginning of a new chapter for The Northern”, with their last release being the Cloudburst EP from late 2021.

“Hourglass” is a masterclass in djent and metalcore with thrilling verses and a soaring chorus. Its lyrics are a reflection on internal struggles with self-loathing that culminate in the realization that the darkness inside you needs to be confronted head-on. The song is produced perfectly, crafting a sense of atmosphere while letting the strong vocal deliveries and hard-hitting instrumentals shine. The one behind that production magic is Jonathan Dolese, whose portfolio also includes work with Cane Hill and For The Fallen Dreams.

The Northern are set to release a series of singles this year that we are definitely looking forward to hearing after getting a taste of what’s to come with this latest song. In the meantime, you can see them live and hold out hope that some unreleased tracks sneak into that setlist alongside “Hourglass”. They will be hitting a few cities in their home region of southern Ontario this month with fellow locals Single Wound, playing dates in London, Toronto, and Ottawa. Fans of bands like Invent Animate, ERRA, and Northlane need to check out “Hourglass”, out now on all platforms!
