Review: Bring Me The Horizon - 'Amo'

British rock band Bring Me the Horizon released their highly anticipated album Amo earlier today Friday, January 25. This marks the band's sixth studio album and is unlike anything they have released before.

As a personal fan of Bring Me the Horizon ever since their first album Count Your Blessings all the way through their latest release That's The Spirit, I was very excited to get the opportunity to write a review on the new album and share with you my honest thoughts.

I'll start with everything I liked about the album:

I have to be honest here, when I first heard the single "MANTRA," I was not a fan AT ALL

A more alternative rock, raw, radio sound was NOT what I was expecting nor what I wanted from the new Bring Me the Horizon. In fact, I was predicting something much more in line with That's The Spirit.

But after further listening, I slowly got the lyrics stuck in my head. "It's too late to tell you now! One ear and right out the other one!" Something about Bring Me the Horizon that I've always thought (regardless of the genre) is that they have always proved themselves as incredible songwriters.

Whether you exclusively like their new songs or just their old material, you cannot deny how brilliant they are in whatever musical atmosphere they place themselves in. That did not change on Amo...AT ALL.

Bring Me the Horizon still kept heavy nuances in songs like "wonderful life," "sugar honey ice & tea" and especially "heavy metal," which rips apart the elitist deathcore kids who shit talk the band and their new direction. "And I keep picking petals. I wonder if they love me anymore? Cause a kid on the 'gram in a Black Dhalia tank says it ain't heavy metal."

And the best part??

THE SONG ENDS ON A FUCKING BREAKDOWN.

So badass, I don't even care who you are.

Even though this album is entirely different than their prior releases, I was super impressed with the mix and production. I will also say vocalist Oliver "Oli" Sykes' has clearly improved a ton since That's The Spirit. There's no question he has been working religiously on his craft.

OK, so things Scene Daddy did NOT like about Amo:

I did NOT enjoy the EDM moments in songs like "Nihilist Blues" and "i apologize if you don't feel anything." I do not care to hear Sykes' vocals modulated an octave lower or higher, and I do not care for the weird audio samples that have nothing to do with musical structure of the songs.

Also, the guest features with Dani Filth, Rahzel and Grimes literally did nothing for me. Not even a wiggle.

Overall:

I dig most songs on this album and some will be making my personal Spotify playlist. However, there are others I truly believe were a big swing and a miss.

Favorite Song: "Medicine"

Most Unique Song: "heavy metal (feat. Rahzel)"

Least Favorite Song: "Nihilist Blues"

Scene Daddy Rating: 4/5 Daddies
