Review: Don Broco - 'HALF MAN HALF GOD'

Don Broco

Don Broco

Bedford, England quartet Don Broco released their first single of the year this past Friday, January 25. The single is the first music released from the band since their high rating album Technology, which debuted a year ago.

The single, titled “Half Man, Half God” is certainly a song that you’d recognize as Don Broco’s, but certain aspects of it is definitely… different.

Let’s start with what I enjoyed about this song.

The first verse of the song features the fast and upbeat instrumentals that DB is known for. The chorus is super memorable and something I can envision myself singing to at a show. “I thought you'd have learned now, I thought you'd have learned by now, ain't no way to get to heaven now, so 'til we're gone, I'm giving all of you all my love.”

The second and third choruses are a bit longer, and just add to the hype of the song. I wouldn’t change a thing about them. The vocals, performed by lead singer Rob Damiani, display a variety of vocal range and pitches and it’s without a doubt that it works for the song. When listening, I can’t help but tap my feet and dance with the beat, which is something that I find true with most DB songs.

And now for a few things that I didn’t enjoy so much.

As a heavy enthusiast for meaningful lyrics that tell a story, this song didn’t strike me as the type. It’s still not bad though. I do like the choruses very much. I just enjoy scrolling through lyrics of a song and finding meanings and things I can relate to. Just a personal preference, however.

Another thing that I wasn’t too fond of was the verses. They go like this: “I just want to live with my gods, I just want to live with my gods, I just want to see what you've got. Half man half god.” They’re loud. Really loud. It feels like the vocals are way too high and drown out the instrumentals that are so powerful and enticing. It’s also a bit difficult to understand what exactly the lyrics are saying there, due to how loud they come across. It reminds me of something that I learned in college, called the Loudness Wars. Google it. It’s a very interesting concept.

Overall, I do enjoy the song and it grows on me as I listen to it more and more. I’m beyond excited to fly down to Orlando in a few months to catch Don Broco on tour this Spring with Dance Gavin Dance, so maybe I’ll get to hear this song live. It would be a bop live, that’s for sure.
