Emo Love Child 'Simple Creatures' Release EP Titled 'Strange Love'
Back in January, Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth announced the birth of their new project Simple Creatures. Their new Ep Strange Love finally dropped on Friday after the three-month wait fans were put through. This, however, was not the first time the two have collaborated with Hoppus. He made an appearance on All Time Low’s Future Hearts and also touring together with the following summer. All Time Low have always taken after Blink 182, starting out as a Blink 182 cover band in high school, and have been following in their footsteps ever since.
This collaboration produced an EP that sounded more like Blink’s California and All Time low’s Birthday had a baby. The duo appears to have stuck with what they knew, instead of bringing something brand new to the table. Granted this is the first and only Ep that has been released by Simple Creatures so far. They could easily surprise fans with something in the near future. Having already teased a song off of their second EP at a concert via Gaskarth’s instagram.
Now, as far as the songs off the EP go, the duo’s first single ‘Drug’ dropped 24 hours after the announcement of Simple Creatures. The reviews about the single were slightly mixed, but overall positive and excited for more. The track itself isn’t astronomically unique. Catchy, but somewhat very similar sounding to Blink’s and ATL’s 2018 eras of music. The other two songs released prior to the release of the EP (‘Strange Love’ and ‘Adrenaline’) were the same, happy songs tailored to the summer. ‘Strange Love’ has to be my favorite off of the EP, considering I feel it did the most justice to Hoppus’ and Gaskarth’s vocals. The song showed how unique they both sound. My only major issue with the EP is three of the six songs on it were released before the entire thing. I understand releasing a few singles for an album, but releasing half an EP before its set date is just a pet peeve of mine. It’s something that I can’t get over when it comes to music being released.
