Concert promoting giants Live Nation and AEG are expected to postpone tours through the end of March, due to the spread of COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus. Large gatherings are advised against as health officials attempt to contain the spread of the virus, which is believed to be spread through person-to-person contact.
A joint statement from Live Nation and AEG said the companies are “ensuring precautionary efforts and ongoing protocol are in the best interest of artists, fans, staff, and the global community.” According to Billboard, a handful of Live Nation concerts are still scheduled to go on this weekend, but Live Nation shows will likely be postponed until at least the end of March. The promoters are expected to review the situation in April, with touring ideally resuming by May or June.
Tool and Dance Gavin Dance are among artists affected by the Live Nation/AEG ban. Artists including Pearl Jam and Bikini Kill postponed US shows earlier this month, with major festivals like Coachella and Ultra also postponing or outright canceling 2020 editions. The live music industry is expected to suffer major revenue losses, with Syracuse.com reporting Live Nation’s stocks lost over a billion dollars on Wednesday. Outside of concerts, Broadway shows are being suspended, while the NBA and NHL announced their seasons will be postponed as well.
