REVIEW: Featherweight "In Ember"
The metalcore genre has experienced a rebirth since the quarantine as of late. With many bands having the time to sit down and attend to their craft, lots of new-found treasures have blossomed within this time of disquietude, sickness, and uncertainty. While many bands are wanting to transform the way we listen to the genre now more than ever, we take a trip to Akron, Ohio, where melodic-metalcore act Featherweight wants to mold a unique spot for themselves with their new release "In Ember."
Touring with the likes of huge acts such as Knockout Kid, Carousel Kings, We Are Sharks, and Home Sweet Home in 2017, they are a seed within the metalcore community that has only begun to bloom more ardently within the last few years. Now the band has returned with "In Ember," their latest music release since their 2019 EP Sleep Well. "In Ember" debuted October 20th of this year, " hitting us with a technical-percussive edge, splashes of atmospheric electronic keystrokes, gritty hardcore guitar licks, and a touch of vocal and instrumental melodic bliss sugared within to create an unexampled sound that is their own.
Building on the aggressive and canorous instrumental foundations they established within their last EP, the band has confidently and comfortably found themselves in this genre with this latest release. Featherweight doesn't only craft well-formed bellicose experiences but also tells stories about the internal struggles of the world through their music. Though still early for the up-and-coming band, if Featherweight is looking to further their presence with their current sound, this may be their ticket in if they continue to release hits like this.
