INTERVIEW: DEAD BUNDY: On "Better Alive" and Writing Music From the Heart

Up and coming pop-punk band Dead Bundy are known for their classic callbacks to nostalgic pop-punk while still keeping things light-hearted, fun, and audacious. However, Dead Bundy has decided to take things a bit deeper with their latest single release, "Better Alive." While the song itself will give our audio senses an energetic kick intertwined with heavy somber notes, Dead Bundy has softened the blow in true Dead Bundy fashion with a vivid and unique animated music video. I chatted with the band members to dive deeper into their latest release, their music video, and what it means to them outside of their past singles.

How did the idea for the music video come about? Why make it animated as opposed to the other videos you have done?

We spent our Saturday mornings watching Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon as kids. We always wanted to see what we would look like animated, even way back in the day. The message of this song is much heavier than our other songs, and we felt the animation was a good juxtaposition of softening the blow and still telling a story creatively without any physical limitations.

What do you want people to take away from this track and the video?

We all grew up on underground alternative/punk music and treated the songs as a release to overcome personal hardship. Everyone experiences a loss to some extent, and it’s tough to suppress these feelings forever. With “Better Alive”, the lyrics are heavy, but we didn’t want to encapsulate that with a sad acoustic song. The heavier, energetic music felt like the right way to deliver this type of message. We all got a need to jam it out to feel better every once in a while.

Instrumentally and vocally, we have talked in the past and even in this track, it's clear the vibes of Sum 41 run deep and that you guys are huge fans of the group. Lyrically, what does this song mean to you personally?

We’ve all lost people in our lives for many reasons, and this song is a steady reminder to live in the moment and enjoy what you have while you have it. Some of our closest friends took things a step too far and made shitty decisions that ended things too soon. It sucks that we can’t create new memories with those friends. Instead, we live in the past through pictures or videos. We all live our lives pretty fast, but at some point, the party’s over. If you can’t stop and breathe sometimes and enjoy what's around you, what’s the point to life, ya know?
