Visions Of an Artist: Coast N' Bay
Bright pop-punk alternative newcomers Coast N' Bay are not your typical standard genre band. The Houston, Texas native's recent 2019 release, As Our Journey Begins gave us the best of their sun-drenched guitar strings, ocean-wet nostalgic pop-punk vocals, and wave-crashing percussive energies that took us to those summers that we wished we could live in forever. The band has many expansive influences within As Our Journey Begins and as musicians, and bassist Wilfert Johnwell is ready to share them with us in the latest edition of Visions of an Artist!
The first album I ever bought was?
From Under The Cork Tree by Fall Out Boy. They’re my favorite band and the reason I picked up a guitar and wanted to be in a band!
An album I wish I created was?
The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. That album changed the game! had one of the biggest impacts on the music industry for sure.
Favorite Album Art?
When Broken Is Easily Fixed by Silverstein. The symbol of the robot holding his heart outside of his body really sets the tone for an album about heartbreak, very powerful.
Someone asked what my definition of pop-punk was, the album I told them to listen to was?
Take This To Your Grave by Fall Out Boy. It’s just a pop-punk masterpiece with Patrick’s amazing vocal harmonies, dark lyrics backed with an upbeat instrumental, catchy chorus, just every song on there is so much fun to play. The track “Calm Before The Storm” is the one that really made me fall in love with them.
An album I can drive around to nonstop is?
“All We Know Is Falling” by Paramore. Can’t skip a track! Hayley’s voice is just incredible, songs like “Pressure”, “Here We Go Again”, and “Emergency” are my favorite. I find myself pressing on the gas and driving a little harder than I should be hahaha.
An album I'm addicted to listening to is?
Feel Something by Movements was an album I was pretty addicted to for a while. They really do have the best lyrics and emotion in their music.
An album no one will believe I listen to or own is?
I’m also a big fan of rap artists like Juice Wrld, Lil Uzi Vert, Rod Wave, Young Thug, Kevin Gates, etc. Goodbye & Good Riddance by Juice Wrld got me through some pretty hard times.
An album I detest most is?
Can’t say it’s an album I hate, If I’m not a fan I just won’t listen to them haha.
An album that takes me back to my childhood is?
The Silence In Black and White by Hawthorne Heights. Brings back a lot of memories and nostalgia. Such a great album to listen to while going through a break-up.
An album that got me got me into my career as a musician?
I know I talk a lot about Fall Out Boy but Take This To Your Grave really is the reason I got into music, From Under The Cork Tree as well. They both were gateways and opened up my world to so much more music. I wouldn’t be who I am today without them, their music saved my life. I even play Pete Wentz’s signature bass guitar because he’s my idol and I really strive to be like him one day!
The soundtrack to my life would be?
A Lesson In Romantics by Mayday Parade. Such an amazing band live and all their songs are relatable. Literally would have this album on repeat for days at a time hahaha. “You Be The Anchor..” is probably my favorite track on there.
An album that will always hold sentimental value is?
My band’s Coast n’ Bay debut album As Our Journey Begins. The entire album just means a lot to us, it’s been a pleasure being able to perform these songs and see people’s reaction. The best feeling in the world is hearing your lyrics being shouted back at you! It’s opened so many doors for us, check it out! on all streaming services! (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)
If you were left stranded on an island with nothing but a CD player, batteries, and one album, which album would you want to be left with to pass the time?
Take This To Your Grave, of course! I would jam that album on my blue CD player in middle school religiously haha.
This album got me through 2020?
It’s a couple to name a few I’ll say After Laughter by Paramore, What You Don’t See by The Story So Far, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love by My Chemical Romance, Belmont’s self-titled album, Pray 4 Love by Rod Wave. There’s more, but it’s tough to just pick one album because 2020 was such a hard year for a lot of us, hoping 2021 is a lot better!
