New England djent/metalcore outfit Gannon have released an unexpected, yet welcomed cover of the hip hop classic “I Got 5 On It” - originally performed by Luniz. Balancing smooth flows with melodic heaviness, this band is capitalizing on the recent trend of seamlessly blending genres into heavy music, as executed by the likes of Falling In Reverse.

To date, the band has released two EP’s - aptly titled EP 1 in 2018 and EP 2 in 2019 - with a handful of singles, including “Harder to Breathe” and “Expiration” in 2020. While these previous releases have stuck to a traditional djent/metalcore sound, the band has since undergone a lineup change and this cover showcases their range of influences, and potentially new sound direction. "This song is a callback to some of the music we grew up on, a song that reminds of our early influences as kids,” says the band. “Taking a song like this and making it metal is a blast”

“I Got 5 On It” is just the start of what’s to come from Gannon in 2021. With the ongoing restrictions in the touring and live music industry, the band spent most of 2020 writing and recording new material. “We're sitting on tons of new content.” They continue, “We have 2 EP’s wrapped up that will be released this year; they both have very different vibes and feature guest appearances from some of the best musicians in New England.”

This recent release is sure to bring in some new fans, but we can safely say that their previous material and the promise of new material coming will be the driving force in keeping fans hooked on Gannon throughout 2021. If you haven’t already, check out the official music video for “I Got 5 On It” below and be sure to follow the band on social media for their follow-up releases!
